I am sure your little ones have come home excited that they started Daily 5 last week! I have been meaning to post pictures. Daily 5 is a group of stations during our literacy block while I hold guided reading groups. The stations include Read to Self, Read to Write, Listen to Reading, Word Work and Work on Writing.
Read to Self
During Read to Self they have the opportunity to read books that are on their instructional reading level that are in book bins. This allows them to work on their reading but it also allows them to grow a joy for reading with books they picked out. They also have comfortable seating to choose from.
Listen to Reading
During Listen to Reading the students are listening to a story being read. This allows them to see and hear how reading should sound fluently. They are also answering questions based on the story they heard.
Word Work
During Word Work they have about 6 different options to work with their spelling words of the week. Here they are spelling their words with magnets. Other examples are writing the words on white boards and writing them in rainbow colors.
Work on Writing
During Work on Writing they get to choose from fun writing prompts and just enjoy writing. I think it is important to grow an enjoyment for writing.
Read to Write/Small Group
Read to Write in a new station I am trying this year. After benchmarking the class I noticed that a lot of students fell below grade level just because of their written comprehension. They are able to decode the words but expressing their comprehension with writing shows to be a struggle. During small group we will be working on this skill and during the Read to Write station they will practice this skill. I will also be slowly sending these written question prompts home to practice at home as well.
